The Santa Maria Valley Railroad A Wholly-Owned Subsidiary of Coast Belle Rail Corporation Press Release December 26, 2006 For Immediate Release SMVRR Freight Depot Now Open to the Public Last Saturdays of the Month Commencing December 30, 2006 [As of June 30, 2007, the depot is no longer open according to this schedule.] The Santa Maria Valley Railroad Company will open their display area of the freight depot to the public on the last Saturday of the month starting this Saturday, December 30, 2006 from 1:00 to 4:00. The SMVRR freight depot is located at PO Box 5665, Santa Maria, California. Check out the displays featuring the past and present operations of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad. The Company Store will be open featuring two books from author Hal Madson, Railroads of the Santa Maria Valley, and his latest book, Betteravia, Memories of a Modern California Ghost Town. T-Shirts featuring the new logo for the SMVRR and other gift ideas are available at the Company Store. The historic freight depot was built in 1914 after the original depot built in 1911 was destroyed by fire. The display area of the freight depot was a railway post office, or RPO. It served as the UPS of its time, a place where large parcels could be sent and received. The original RPO weigh scale remains in the display area. Also the restored former SMVRR caboose next to the freight depot will be open for tours. Former SMVRR caboose No. 180 was restored by the Santa Maria Valley Railway Historical Museum.
