Part Time Santa Maria Valley Railroad Employee Injured in Memorial Day Weekend Altercation

Vegetation control worker and Conductor Trainee Nathan Paul, a San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Deputy, was responding to a call on Memorial Day Weekend at Lake Nacimento when he was struck by a pickup truck while trying to apprehend a suspect involved with an altercation. The suspect was running over tents with his pickup truck and tried to flee from deputy sheriffs including Nathan on the scene. The suspect struck Nathan with his pickup truck and is charged with attempted murder of a peace officer. Nathan suffered a compound fracture of his leg and was operated on the next day at Twin Cities Hospital in Templeton. Nathan is at home recovering and a full recovery is expected.
Nathan is in charge of vegetation control on the right of way and has spent the past year clearing the right of way of vegetation. Nathan rebuilt the John Beam weed sprayer last year. Nathan is also a Conductor Trainee and volunteers for our freight and officer special excursion events and Motorcar excursions. In his spare time, Nathan is restoring a Southern Pacific bay window caboose in his backyard. Nathan's wife Chantel is a banker and is an advisor for the railroad. We wish Nathan to a speedy and full recovery!
